A spin on an exercise I enjoy doing as a warm up. Draw a random shape and build something out of its silhouette, this time I used random dabs of watercolor. It helps to bring a bit more randomness to the party than straight pencil shapes which tend to take on the same characteristics after a while. Other materials include Kosher Salt and white paint.

austen, mind if i ask you for some inking tips? i'm trying to get to it right now and controlling line weight, or even just getting things in the right place takes a lot of time and patience, and the result is not even acceptable.

Sorry for the delayed reply, I dont have a worthwhile excuse for that other than procrastination, oops! Thanks for dropping me a line though! Im not the best at relaying thoughts through text so im not sure how helpful my tips will be, but i’ll give it a shot! Inking is a fickle process for sure, im always having the same issues you mentioned about line weight and line placement, but i just try and steamroll through it. I notice quite often when i’m inking I think it looks good in the beginning, halfway through I absolutely hate it and want to quit, but if you keep going things usually work out well in the end. That being said I think a big part of inking is to not care and just dive into it, sure you’ll mess up more than a few cool sketches but the more you do it the better you get. I know you can attest to that logic based on how awesome you’ve gotten with your pencils drawings and crosshatching, its all practice and repetition.

Something i often do when i dont want to destroy a good sketch is just use basic tracing paper! lay it on top of your drawing, tape it in place and start inking. You’ll probably find the smooth texture of tracing paper much more suitable to taking ink than regular printer paper, or whatever you sketch on (though be warned, ink doesnt absorb as readily into the tracing paper and smears easily!). That way if you mess up you can just scrap the tracing paper and start over!

Thats what i have to share at the moment, no doubt i’ll think of more once i press ‘send’. But if you’re interested i’ll just send you noted here and there when i think of things. I’ll try to maybe even provide some process scans and reccomend some books for you.

Speaking of which, a good book to check out is ‘rendering in pen and ink’ by arthur guptill —> http://www.amazon.com/Rendering-Pen-Ink-Techniques-Illustrators/dp/0823045293 If you can download it go for it, if you can buy it even better! Its one of my favorite books on the subject.
